Have you ever felt like your diet was consuming your life?

A few years back I made it my New Year's goal to do a bikini competition. Now, a bikini competition is not like a figure or bodybuilding competition. You don't get judged on your athletic endeavors or how big your muscles are. You are being evaluated on the overall package of how your body looks symmetrically while having long lean muscles.

I thought it would be a good goal to work towards because I had never tried anything like that before.

Prior to that, I had run marathons and other races, but I had never entered anything where I was being judged off of how I looked.

I started this goal in January and didn't stop until September. Over those next 9 months, I learned a lot about myself and my diet that I never knew before.

For nine months straight I...

-logged my calories everyday

-only went over my calorie allowance 9 days the whole time

-became obsessed about what I was eating

-had to know where I was going out to eat, so I could prepare and plan my food ahead of time

-refrained from all food that made me happy

-didn't eat my friend's delicious dishes

...did not go a single hour, minute, or day without thinking about my diet.

I was in diet hell.

I'm a very goal driven person. I've also discovered through counseling that I'm a 0-100 person - I'm either all in or all out. During those 9 months I was all in and no one was going to stop me.

I can go into deeper into how those 9 months affected my body another time, but for now I want to stick to how those 9 months of diet hell affected my mind.

After the competition was over I...

-ate everything I felt like I had deprived myself from

-didn't keep track of anything I was eating

-felt like 'I deserved' all food because of how hard I worked

IF you want to know more about whether the 'I deserve it' mentality is sabotaging your diet then click here for my blog about this.

Over the next 3 months, I undid a lot of my hard work I did in 9 months

by gaining 25 pounds

and gorging myself on a weekly basis.

Have you ever done this?

Maybe this is extreme from you. However you do feel like you are in diet hell. You feel like you can never eat what you really want to eat and you think about your food a lot.

Here is my biggest 'aha' moment on how to get yourself out of diet hell and into diet heaven...

She believes that you need to be creative to get your workouts in. She shares other amazing tips for getting your workouts into your crazy schedules.

Also, she ended up placing first in her first figure competition at 49! She was able to stick to a rigid diet while taking care of her family. It was really out of her comfort zone, but she kicked ass at it!! She shares her best tips on how she was able to achieve her goal while everything else was going on.

These are some thoughts going on inside my head:

-I wish I had abs like that

-I really hate my thighs, maybe those exercises will help me get rid of them

-I need work harder

-My body will never look like that

-No matter how hard I try I never get those kinds of results

-Why is it so much easier for everybody else?

Are any of those true for you?

They are true for me.

The world of social media is an amazing world but it can also be a cruel world.

I remember when I first decided to take my passion and purpose of fitness on the internet and felt horrible. I would post a simple pic of me doing a yoga pose with a quote and then go online to see other people's posts and thinking, "their abs are flatter than mine" or "why would anyone like my pic when I don't have a great butt like this girl" or "I guess I need workout harder so I can keep up these girls."

Pretty soon I started feeling inferior, self-conscious, and felt like 'why bother because I can't keep up with these girls.'

I was experiencing social media shame

Social media shame is real. It's something that is being researched and talked about in psychology circles. I have talked to many university psychology professors about this and they are saying that social media shame is an epidemic nowadays.

Social media shame isn't just limited to fitness. Have you ever tried to make the couple cupcakes on Pintrest and they are a totally fail!

We start to feel like not only are our abs aren't flat enough, our butts aren't big enough, our cooking looks horrible, and we can't get our party decorations to look like the ones on Pintrest.

Then this dreaded thought pops into our heads:

Why can everyone else do it but me?

I hope you never have that thought but if you have I want to help you. I have, and do suffer from social media shame myself and because of that, I have learned a few tips and tricks to help get myself out it.

Have you ever thought…

“F*** it! I just ate this so I might as well eat that.”

Scenario #1

What I’m referring to you when you go out to dinner with your friends and you think in your mind “I’m only going to order the salad. Nothing else.” Then when your friends order deep fried mozzarella balls and artichoke dip and you suddenly think “F*** it! I’m just going to have what they are having and worry about my diet tomorrow.”

But it doesn’t stop there…

You end  up ordering a couple of beers, fried chicken, and dessert. Pretty soon you’ve just eaten everything in sight.

or…

Scenario #2

You look inside your fridge for something to eat and you can’t find anything. You could maybe whip up a salad but doesn’t seem appetizing. Then you open the freezer and see a frozen pizza and think “F*** it! I’m just going to eat this because I’m hungry and it’s easy to make.

But it doesn’t stop there…

You end up finishing the whole pizza, going back and having a bowl of cereal, and some ice cream.

Has this ever happened to you?

If it has you may have had the following thoughts…

-Now what do I do?

-I’ve failed

-I might as well give up

-There goes all my hard work

-and many other thoughts

I know how you feel because those are the thoughts I have when I binge eat. It’s so easy to lost in thoughts and lose all your momentum.

I’m here to help you get out of your stuck mentality and get into a success mentality.

You are not a bad person because you binge ate everything. In fact your not a bad anything! You are human and it happens.

I have learned a lot about this from myself and working with hundreds of people of the years and I’ve learned 3 CRUCIAL Questions you need to ask yourself after you binge eat in order to take yourself from the stuck mentality to a success mentality.

Let me paint a daily scenario I have…

“I need to lose weight, can you help me do that?”

“Absolutely! Here is a diet plan for you to follow, that if you do, you will for sure lose weight.”

“Awesome! I will totally follow this! Thank you so much!!”

———————————————Two Weeks Later———————————

“How’s it going? Have you lost any weight yet?”

“No…”

“How come?”

“I tried to follow the diet, but I couldn’t. My sister had a birthday and there was cake. My co-workers wanted to go out for happy hour and the drinks were half off. I decided to have a cheat meal and ate a whole pizza. I just couldn’t stick to the diet.”

Have you ever felt like this person? Perhaps you had the best intentions of sticking to a diet and couldn’t. Things came up, a cheat meal turned into a cheat weekend, and everything snowballed from there.

I want you to know that you are like so many others that I have helped and you aren’t a failure at dieting.

Dieting is 50% Mentality & 50% Habits

Before I can change your diet habits, I have to change your mentality towards it.

I was racking my brain for years to try and figure out how to change people’s mentality towards dieting and came up with nothing for a long time. It was so frustrating.

Then it dawned on me one day…dieting is like dating.

Once I discovered this, I was able to simplify and change people’s diet mentality. By changing their mentality, I changed their habits. By changing their habits, I was able to help them lose weight permanently.

How amazing would it feel if you could lose weight AND keep it off for good?

How awesome would it feel to be one of those people that doesn’t struggle with their diet?

I can help you with that! All we need to do is change the way you view your diet.

Back to dieting being like dating. Here are 3 ways they are similar:

Do you like to go out to eat?

My boyfriend and I like to eat together. We love to chat about our day, talk about our business, and share our thoughts about life, love, and crazy things that happen.

When we share a meal together, our plates look very different, and there are several reasons for that.

  • He eats meat and I don’t
  • I love vegetables and he does not (However he did learn to love them and I shared those tips in this blog here)
  • He’s 6’2 and 5’4

You might be thinking why does that last reason matter so much? Well, it’s because when you get down to it, he naturally burns more calories than me because of his height.

Since he is almost a foot taller than me, it takes more energy (or calories) for him to walk, talk, and do daily activities. Here’s the other annoying thing – when we workout, he burns more calories, because it does take him more energy.

Basically to sum it up…he burns more calories than me and it sucks.

Now, I don’t want you to think I’m complaining. I’m talking to you about this because it was hard for me for years to eat dinner with him, and not want to eat the amount he was eating.

I compared my smaller portions to his and got jealous. Have you ever done that?

Have you ever…

  • Stared at your friend’s delicious pizza and stared at your salad, wishing you were eating what they were eating?
  • Looked at the amount your sister is eating and think ‘God! She’s so lucky! Is she going to eat all that and not gain a pound!’?
  • Watched some eat an organic, dressing-less salad and wonder how the heck are they enjoying that so much?

If you have ever done one or all of those things…

Then you, my friend, have Dieter’s Envy.

Now, having suffered from that myself, I had to learn some tips and tricks on how to conquer it.

Here are 3 simple ways for you to conquer Dieter’s Envy and have Dieter’s Enjoyment…

When I woke up today, the first thing I thought about before my feet hit the floor were:

  • I need to get the slide show done for work
  • I need to finish the budget and turn it into the manager
  • Don’t forget to grab that shirt for my coworker
  • What am I making for dinner? Do I have all the ingredients, or do I need to pick them up at the store?
  • That reminds me!! I need to get breakfast for my coworkers.
  • It’s my coworker’s birthday on Friday. What should I get her for a gift?

The list goes on and on and on. I know you know what I’m talking about because you have that same running list in your head.

Oh! And on top of all that, you need to go workout.

Working out can often fall to the bottom of the list and not get done. At least it has for me, and the people I work with.

Life is crazy, and it can seem impossible at times to fit working out in. I get that, and I want to help you with that.

I wanted to share with you 3 tips and tricks to getting your workouts in while your life is crazy, deadlines are stacking up, and there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done.

Don’t stress. I have 3 ways to help you.

I deserve it header

Has this ever been you?

“I’ve worked hard this week!! I had a ton of deadlines with work and I hit them all. I was able to avoid the happy hour with my coworkers and went home and cooked myself a healthy meal instead. I even got my workouts in this week! I did a lot and I deserve..”

And that ‘I deserve it’ concludes with:

  • A glass of wine
  • A large pizza
  • A burger
  • A margarita
  • Take a break from working out this weekend
  • And so on…

Your ‘I deserve it’ indulgence ends up becoming your ‘I deserve it’ sabotage.

You end up…

  • Drinking the bottle of wine
  • Eating the whole pizza
  • Having fries and a shake to go with your burger
  • Having a margarita the size of your head
  • Not being active at all
  • And so on…

You end up undoing all your hard work of 4 days, in 3 days or dare I say one meal. Then you end up right back where you started, and you are left with shame and guilt.

If you wonder how I know this, it’s because I’ve done the same thing. I’ve had the ‘I deserve it’ bottle of wine and the ‘I deserve it’ whole pizza. I know how you feel afterwards because it’s how I feel.

Having been in this situation myself, and wanting to help others who have suffered from it too, I figured out 3 HUGE ways you can break your ‘I deserve it’ mentality.
