What are you eating for Thanksgiving?

Do you have one dish that you look forward to all year?

  • Is it...mom’s turkey?
  • Is it...your aunt’s casserole?
  • Is it...your grandma’s pumpkin pie?

Maybe you are looking forward to all that and more!!

According the Calorie Control Council an average American consumes 4500 calories and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving.

That’s mind blowing crazy!!!

Did I get your attention yet?

There are several reasons why I believe this happens. Here are few of my theories

  1. The day is centered around food so it seems inevitable.
  2. Some of those dishes you only have once a year so if you don’t eat it then you will miss out.
  3. People suffer from “last meal” mentality.

You might be thinking what the heck is “last meal” mentality. It’s something I came up with to describe when people gorge themselves at a meal that they will never have ever again.

Here are a couple signs and symptoms to know if you have suffered from this…

  • you go back for extra servings when you are already stuffed beyond belief
  • you know going into the meal you are going to overeat
  • you already have excuses or justifications if guilt starts to seep into your head

Does any of that sound familiar?

Most people that suffer from this wake up the next day feeling disgusting, guilty, and possibly regretting it. Also it oftentimes leads to greater weight gain because it goes into the “F*** it” mentality (wanna know about that then click here) or reverses any progresses you may have had.

The “last meal” mentality usually hinders people more than helps people.

Now, I’ve already wrote a blog on how to avoid eating a lot at parties. If you want to learn some tips and tricks to avoid that then click here.

I want to talk to you about what to do if you are suffering from “last meal” mentality.

Before I get started I want you to know I suffer from this too. It happens to me on Thanksgiving, Christmas, my birthday and other holidays. These tips originated because I needed them and then I started sharing them with others when I saw they had the same problem.

Have you ever…

Those words bring me back to high school and college days. Anyone else play that game? It was a silly game where you say “have your ever…” and then fill with something crazy and ridiculous like “ate a sandwich while in a pool” or “ran butt naked through your college campus”.  If you had done what the person said then you stood up or in college you took a shot.

Let’s play that game right now!!

Take a shot of water if you have done any of these things.

Have you ever…

-tried to lose weight for a dress you have to wear

-tried to lose weight for a reunion you are attending

-tried to lose weight for a vacation you are going on

Did you take a shot yet? Okay, let’s get more personal.

Have you ever...

-tried to lose weight to impress somebody

-tried to lose weight because you were going to see someone you haven’t seen in a long time

-tried to lose weight for a person you were dating

How many shots did you take?

If you have ever done any of these things then…

CONGRATULATIONS!!

You are normal!!

We’ve all done it. Even me.

When was the last time you said…

I want to lose weight.

For some of you that was...this morning, last week, or even 5 minutes ago.

I can’t even count how many people have said that to me. In fact when I fly and the person next to me asks me what I do I say I am an accountant because there are not usually many follow-ups to that. However, if I say I’m a weight loss coach then they have a million questions that last the whole flight.

Moral of the story is…

a lot of people want to lose, but not a lot do.

For the longest time, I remember people telling me they want to lose weight. I would say “Great!!” Then I would set them up with everything they needed. I would give them workouts, break down their diet completely so they knew exactly what to eat and what to buy at the grocery store, and I would even give them coaching tools so I could help train them mentally. (If you are thinking I wish I had all that then you can!! Sign up here for my complete weight loss plan.)

Then I would check back in with them and find out they only stuck to the diet for 3 days and their workouts died off after 4 days. I was completely confused. I would get frustrated. I thought I had given them everything they needed, but it wasn’t working.

Then I started to notice people’s habits when they started weight loss programs.

When you have started a new diet or workout have you…

  • told your friends so they keep you accountable
  • gone to the grocery store with your list to pick out the exact foods you need
  • bought new workout clothes
  • posted inspirational quotes to your facebook page
  • posted a pic on Facebook of your first day or your new diet
  • posted a pic on Instagram of your sweaty face after your first workout

Dose any of this sound familiar?

Then after a few days or a week of doing all that your momentum dies down, you start to lack motivation, and then you seem to be right back where you started.

That my friend is called a habit.

Mom...what’s for dinner?

Do you remember asking that question? My amazing and wonderful mother wasn’t around to cook dinner so for me it was more like “Dad, whatcha cooking?” or “Bro! I’m hungry”. My dad and brother did a lot of the cooking growing up.

Now you might be thinking “that’s a nice antidote but what does that have to do with dieting?” Well, a lot.

I think we can all agree that our childhood and how we were raised plays a huge role in

-who we are

-what we like

-how we communicate

-our habits

-our mentality

-what we eat

-and so much more!!!

Many of the people I meet and work with

have bad habits and mentality towards food

they have no idea where they come from.

They discover through working me that many of those bad habits or mentality come from their childhood. However for them they are so deep-rooted that they don’t even know it.

I’ve always said, “if you want to fix the future then understand the past” (feel free to tweet that at and tag me @michellerosefit). If you don’t understand the past you are doomed to repeat it over and over and over again.

Here are 2 examples of mentality and diet in which your past is preventing you from losing weight and you don’t even know it…
